The World Cup was officially over this past weekend when Spain faced the Netherlands in a championship match beating them 1-0. It was a street full event as people partied on Toronto streets. Fans were friendly on both sides and there was no true animosity between each other. There were even a few orange shirts amongst the red party goers who blended in with the wild dancing, and vuvuzela blowing. This picture was taken on College Street east of Bathurst, where most of the fans were cheering for Spain and of course for Paul, the octopus celebrity.
With surprising and some might say disappointing results throughout the tournament, Paul the “psychic” octopus managed to correctly predict the winning team. With an 8 – 8 record for predicting winners in this years World Cup, he is now retiring from his career as an oracle and will be going back to his day job at the aquarium. After a tough year of predictions and death threats he can now peacefully live out the rest of his short life.
So what’s next in Toronto? Until the next soccer “samba” (hint hint) fever in 4 years … we might as well bust out our TFC gear and continue the need to scream on the streets for the sake of sports!
